The Secrets Brands Won't Tell You

There are some secrets to being a smart shopper that your favorite brands don't want you to know. Now I'm not one to discourage you from shopping (obviously), but I do want to stop you from wasting your time, money, and energy on a wardrobe that simply isn't working for you.

You know that bag full of clothing donations that's been rolling around in your trunk for the past 3 months? My guess is that it's mostly full of things that are not in your color palette, that don't flatter your body type, or that were random purchases made without intention on how they fit into your existing lifestyle or wardrobe. There's nothing really wrong with those pieces, but they just don't feel like you.

And that's exactly what retailers are counting on - you buy something and wear it a few times, realize you don't love it but aren't sure why, donate it, come back to buy a replacement a few months later, and repeat. The solution to stopping that cycle is discovering your Signature Style. When you buy clothing in colors, shapes, and styles that go well together and make you look fantastic, the less turnover you have in your closet, and yes, the less you spend on clothes.

Spotlight on Summer

COLORFUL COMBINATIONS

swimwear fit guide

Secret #1: Smart shoppers know their best colors

Every season, there's a specific shade of each color that's trending. This season has been full of butter yellows, powder blues, and bright purples. When you don't know which shades are in your color palette, every new color that hits the shelves can feel tempting, and the wrong ones end up in your donation bags month after month.

Secret #2: Luxe pricing does not equal luxe quality

Designer items that are 100% polyester with embellishments falling off at the store should be a criminal offense. Look for natural fibers, well constructed seam finishes, and strong hardware like buttons and zippers.

Secret #3: There is no universal size chart

You probably wear a different size at every store you go to, and that's because size charts are completely made up. Seriously, every brand creates their own. Some even participate in vanity sizing, meaning their size 4 is closer to a 6 or 8 with their competitors.

It's hard to create great outfits when everything in your closet feels random or uninspiring. The goal isn't to buy more or less clothes, but the right ones. And once they're right, style becomes as effortless and genuine as your signature itself.
